A Moldovan citizen was detained at the border and enlisted in the Ukrainian army after traveling to visit relatives, according to Vasile Costiuc. The incident reportedly occurred on April 13, 2026, at the Briceni–Rossosany border crossing.

The MP described the case on social media, stating that the man, originally from Briceni district, obtained Ukrainian citizenship in 2019, which authorities later revoked, as dual citizenship was not permitted in Ukraine at that time.

According to Costiuc, Ukrainian authorities reinstated the rights of individuals whose citizenship had previously been withdrawn in 2023, even without a formal request.

Representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Ukraine stated that they are in contact with Ukrainian authorities to clarify the situation. According to the Ukrainian side, the individual is considered a Ukrainian citizen. Officials said that checks have not identified any documents confirming the loss of Ukrainian citizenship. Under Ukrainian law, a person who holds Ukrainian citizenship is treated exclusively as a Ukrainian citizen in relations with the state, even if they also hold other citizenships. The embassy noted that it continues to monitor the case.

Earlier, Mihai Popsoi said that no formal requests regarding the incident had been submitted to Moldova’s embassy in Kyiv, but the diplomatic mission initiated a review of the case on its own.
