Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced at the beginning of a cabinet meeting that the Republic of Moldova will sign a new cooperation agreement with the International Monetary Fund for a period of three years.
The head of government said the authorities and the IMF share an understanding regarding the pace of reforms and the country’s priorities for the coming period.
“This is not just a routine formality, but the result of considerable effort. For us, it is a clear signal that international partners believe that the Republic of Moldova, first of all, has a professional team, knows what it is doing, is moving in the right direction at a good pace, even when external circumstances remain very complicated,” the Moldovan prime minister said.
The previous IMF program ended at the end of October 2025. However, the Republic of Moldova did not receive the last two financing tranches, totaling approximately 170 million US dollars, because the authorities failed to meet several commitments, particularly related to budget expenditures.
An IMF mission visited the country from May 7 to 20 at the request of the Moldovan authorities. Officials held talks with representatives in Chișinău and the mission also met President Maia Sandu at the Presidency.
