Siegfried Muresan stated in an interview with RFI România that the Republic of Moldova has become “an oasis of stability, democracy, and European aspirations” in the Romanian-speaking space, despite the political shocks it has faced in recent years.

“A weak prime minister in Bucharest may leave projects launched with the Republic of Moldova only at the declarative stage, but Chisinau’s European path is not under threat at this moment because Brussels strongly supports and anchors it. Romania will always remain a major supporter of the Republic of Moldova, but it matters greatly whether it has a prime minister who truly implements projects and genuinely wants a strong Moldova integrated into the European Union and as close as possible to Romania, as Ilie Bolojan does, or whether it will have a future prime minister who limits himself to friendly statements toward the Republic of Moldova without active involvement,” Muresan said.

The MEP stated that the future of relations between Bucharest and Chisinau depends on the real involvement of Romania’s future government in joint projects with Moldova, including bridges over the Prut River, energy interconnections, and support for European integration.

“Romania will always be a major supporter of the Republic of Moldova, but it matters greatly whether it has a prime minister who truly implements projects,” Muresan added.

At the same time, Muresan said that Moldova’s European path “is not in any way in danger” because European institutions and the pro-European majority in the European Parliament support it.

“What is certain is that the European path of the Republic of Moldova is in no way at risk. It is very well anchored. In the European Parliament, we have a broad majority of pro-European forces supporting the rapid integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union. We see full support from the European Commission and from member states. Therefore, the overall support for Moldova’s European integration path remains unaffected.”

In the interview, the MEP sharply criticized the Alliance for the Union of Romanians and the Social Democratic Party, describing them as “anti-European” parties, and accused George Simion of promoting narratives favorable to the Russian Federation.

“The Republic of Moldova is already too strong today for a few failed agents of the Russian Federation, such as George Simion, to stop its European trajectory. He lost the presidential elections, and this new anti-European majority formed in Romania’s Parliament by PSD and AUR is an artificial majority. It does not reflect the will of the Romanian people,” Muresan stated, adding that Moldovan society is sufficiently informed to resist propaganda and disinformation.

The MEP also compared political developments in Moldova with the current situation in Romania and said that the rise of Maia Sandu demonstrated what “an authentically pro-European government” means.

Romania’s government led by Ilie Bolojan was dismissed on Tuesday, May 5, after the no-confidence motion initiated by PSD and AUR received 281 votes in the joint plenary session of Parliament.
