Navigation through Giurgiulesti is not affected by the sharp decline in the Danube’s water level, although ships must use the Sulina Canal rather than the route near Calarasi, Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea said.
According to the minister, the water depth in the Calarasi area has fallen to 1.8 meters, creating difficulties for vessel traffic.
“At the state port area, the depth is 4.5–4.1 meters, meaning maritime vessels can enter without any obstacles. In the Calarasi area, on the Danube, the depth is 1.8 meters, which is a problem. But if ships use the Sulina Canal, there are no navigation problems,” Bolea said.
The Danube’s water level has dropped dramatically over the past month amid drought conditions. Although the situation in Hungary has improved slightly, Romania continues to face difficulties. On Thursday, the second unit of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant is expected to be shut down because of the record-low water level in the river.
