By the end of 2025, the port of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky in Ukraine plans to launch a new rail transit route for goods from Asia to the European Union, crossing the Republic of Moldova and Romania, according to Bani.md.
Igor Bilyk, Deputy Director of the port, stated that the total route length will be 320 kilometers: 182 km in Ukraine, 129 km in Moldova, and 9 km in Romania. The final destination will be the Romanian city of Galati.
A critical component enabling this project is the large-scale reconstruction of the Bender–Basarabeasca–Etulia–Giurgiulesti railway segment in Moldova. The €108 million modernization project, launched in 2022, involves the rehabilitation of 230 km of rail infrastructure and is funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The main contractor is the Kazakh company Temirzhol Zhendeu LLC.
