Relations with the Republic of Moldova remain extremely important for Romania’s foreign policy, and Bucharest will continue to support the country’s European path and energy interconnection projects, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said.
The statement was made at the Cotroceni Palace, where Dan received heads of diplomatic missions, heads of consular offices and directors of Romanian cultural institutes during the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy.
The Romanian president emphasized that Bucharest supports the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkan states.
“We support the integration process for Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkans, without deviating from the merit-based principle, and we welcome the opening of negotiation clusters for Moldova and Ukraine,” Nicusor Dan said.
He highlighted the importance of Romania’s bilateral relationship with Moldova and progress made on concrete support projects.
“Relations with the Republic of Moldova remain extremely important for our foreign policy, and I am glad that we have made progress in concrete support measures, including energy interconnections with the Republic of Moldova,” Dan added.
Romania Reaffirms Support for Ukraine
Addressing regional security, the Romanian president reaffirmed Bucharest’s support for Ukraine and its efforts to bring the war to an end.
“We want the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible and for solid peace to be achieved in the region. For this, we support Ukraine both bilaterally and in multilateral formats, and we support forms of pressure, especially economic, on Russia,” he said.
Dan also stressed the importance of closer cooperation between Romanian companies and the country’s diplomatic service in order to take advantage of opportunities in international markets.
“As regards economic diplomacy, there are opportunities opening up with the treaties signed by the European Union with Mercosur, India, Indonesia, Australia and other important markets. So, in these areas, there will be opportunities and it is important to have a dialogue between Romanian state-owned companies, Romanian private companies and Romanian diplomacy,” he said.
The 2026 Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy is taking place in Bucharest from August 31 to September 1 under the theme “Diplomacy: the anchor of a changing world.” The meeting is chaired by Romania’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu.
The event brings together the heads of Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of central government institutions and Parliament, as well as representatives of the business and academic communities.
The Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of Romanian Diplomacy Day, celebrated on September 1.
