BUCHAREST/NEW YORK — One year after the long-anticipated return of direct air service between Romania and the United States, more than 40,000 passengers have flown the Bucharest–New York route operated by HiSky, according to the Romanian Embassy in the U.S., as reported by bani.md.
HiSky inaugurated the route on June 7, 2024, when its long-haul-configured Airbus A330-200 departed Henri Coanda International Airport (Otopeni) for John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), restoring a vital connection suspended for over two decades.
In a celebratory post, the Romanian Embassy highlighted the milestone:
“Did you know that over 40,000 passengers flew between Bucharest and New York with HiSky in a year? It is the ever-closer connection between Romania and the United States symbol.”
The message was accompanied by footage of the aircraft’s landing at JFK, emphasizing the symbolic and the revived transatlantic link’s practical importance.

A Regional First and a Strategic Success
HiSky, founded and led by Moldovan pilot Iulian Scorpan, is the first airline in the region to resume direct long-haul flights on this key route. The company’s success demonstrates the growing aviation capacity of Romania and Moldova, reflecting their ability to manage complex international operations with qualified crews and modern infrastructure.
With an average flight time of approximately 10 hours, the service has become a reliable and efficient option for business and leisure travelers, further strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
The success of this initiative could open the door to new intercontinental routes from Eastern Europe, signaling a new era in regional aviation connectivity.
