Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu Highlights Moldova’s EU Progress and Strengthens International Ties at Global Parliamentary Summit

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu met with the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, on the sidelines of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31.

During the meeting, Grosu presented Moldova’s progress on its path toward European Union integration and outlined preparations for the upcoming autumn elections, which he described as critical to the country’s future. He expressed appreciation for Turkey’s continued support of Moldova’s European aspirations and emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral parliamentary cooperation.

“I had a good discussion with my Turkish counterpart. We agreed to enhance communication and strengthen cooperation between our countries’ parliaments,” said Grosu.

Also in Geneva, Grosu held talks with Yerlan Koshanov, Speaker of the Majilis (the lower house of Kazakhstan’s Parliament), focusing on regional security and opportunities for bilateral collaboration.

“We agreed to explore ways to expand cooperation in key areas such as agriculture and exports. I welcomed Kazakhstan’s interest in Moldova’s EU accession progress,” Grosu noted.

Grosu is attending the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in partnership with the United Nations. Held every five years, the conference provides a unique platform for dialogue among parliamentary leaders from around the globe. The current edition addresses topics including inter-parliamentary cooperation, the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, digital transformation, and the protection of vulnerable populations.

Speaking during the plenary session, Grosu emphasized the critical role of parliaments in defending democracy, safeguarding citizens, and maintaining peace.

In addition to official meetings, the Parliament Speaker is scheduled to meet with other legislative counterparts and will also engage with members of the Moldovan community in Switzerland.

Founded in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the world’s oldest multilateral political organization. It brings together 181 national parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies to foster dialogue and cooperation at the legislative level.
