President Maia Sandu met today in Chisinau with Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, marking Virkkunen’s first official visit to the Republic of Moldova.

The two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation between Moldova and the European Union in areas of digital transformation and regional security. A key topic was Moldova’s upcoming integration into the EU’s “Roam Like at Home” initiative, which will eliminate roaming fees starting January 1, 2026. Sandu called this measure “a concrete step that will facilitate connectivity for Moldovan citizens and businesses with the European space.”

The meeting also addressed regional security threats, including hybrid risks and dangers to democratic processes. Sandu emphasized the need to “ensure a free, fair, and interference-free electoral process” during Moldova’s upcoming autumn elections. She reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to consolidating the rule of law and safeguarding democratic institutions.
