“I will lead the Ministry with transparency and integrity and implement the best solutions to protect and improve the environment, taking into account the current and future citizens’ needs.” This is the first communication issued by the new Minister of Environment, Sergiu Lazarencu, after his official appointment to the post.

“I know the sector’s challenges, the immediate priorities of the ministry and subordinate institutions, and the people’s expectations. The environment affects every citizen, so we need to take long-term measures. It is also important to act immediately to reduce pollution and ensure clean air and water,” Lazarencu wrote.

In the Facebook post, the new environment minister announced the next steps.

“Firstly, I will increase green spaces and tougher measures to combat garbage dumped in inappropriate places. My focus will be at accelerating the forest planting program launched by President Maia Sandu and creating platforms for waste management and advancing European Union accession negotiations,” the new environment minister wrote.

Sergiu Lazarencu took the oath of office today, March 14, in the presence of Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The ceremony was held at the Presidency headquarters and was broadcast live on RLIVE TV and RLive.md.

On March 13, Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov resigned as head of the Environment Ministry. This was announced by Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean on his Facebook page.

“I announce changes in the government team. The portfolio of the Ministry of Environment will pass to my colleague Sergiu Lazarenc, a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. I highly appreciate the work done in the ministry. In the coming period, it is important that environmental projects gain momentum,” Recean wrote.

Iordanov commented on her dismissal from her post. According to her, “it was a political decision.” Iordanov held the post of minister since November 16, 2022.
