Police have found fragments that could have come from a drone at the site of an explosion near the village of Colonița, Chisinau municipality, on Friday morning, September 18.
Specialized services are currently at the scene, where they are securing the area, examining the fragments and the site of the explosion, and working to establish the circumstances of the incident.
Experts from the Police Technical and Explosive Investigation Department are examining the fragments and carrying out the necessary checks. The area has been secured, while police continue their investigation to clarify all details.
A loud blast was heard at around 4:20 a.m. in the southwestern area of Colonița, in the direction of Tohatin. Police received several reports through the 112 emergency service.
Earlier, General Inspectorate of Police chief Viorel Cernăuțeanu said the object that caused the explosion had not initially been identified. Six additional police teams and drones were deployed to search the area and determine the possible location and trajectory of the object.
Cernăuțeanu said the incident involved an explosion accompanied by a strong flash of light, but authorities could not initially confirm what type of object had caused it.
The Ministry of Defense said Moldova’s airspace had not been subjected to any unauthorized overflight since September 17 and that the circumstances of the incident were still being clarified.
