The head of Moldova’s General Inspectorate of Police, Viorel Cernauteanu, said that authorities have so far been unable to identify the object that caused an explosion in Colonita on Friday morning, September 18.
“There is a short sequence on the police’s page, but after analyzing other videos and recordings as well, it was an explosion that occurred. Our colleagues initially responded to several calls from the area and began efforts to locate and identify the object. Unfortunately, it could not be located, and six additional teams were deployed,” Cernauteanu explained.
He added that police also used drones to search the area from above and determine the possible location and trajectory of the object.
“In fact, there was an explosion accompanied by a strong flash of light. What exactly it was – we cannot confirm any details about the object at this point,” the police chief said.
A loud blast was heard at around 4:20 a.m. in the southwestern area of Colonita, in the direction of Tohatin. Police received several reports through the 112 emergency service.
