President Maia Sandu today took part in the official launch of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides hosted the event, which brought together senior European officials, including European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During discussions with European leaders, the head of state reiterated Moldova’s firm commitment to continuing its reform agenda. She emphasized that Moldova remains a reliable partner, has demonstrated resilience and a clear European choice, and stands ready to take the next steps in the EU accession process.
In 2025, Moldova made significant progress on its European path. The country initiated technical discussions with the European Commission on three of the six negotiation chapter clusters, accelerated reforms in the justice system and public administration, strengthened institutional capacities, continued aligning national legislation with the European acquis, and completed the screening process. Cooperation with European institutions intensified, while EU support translated into investments, development projects, and measures to strengthen economic and energy resilience. Authorities also began implementing the Moldova Growth Plan.
On the sidelines of the event, President Sandu met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Their talks focused on regional security, efforts to achieve a lasting peace in Europe, bilateral cooperation, and the European integration processes of both countries.
