President Maia Sandu to Parliament: “Our Future Lies in the European Union – Let’s Work Day and Night to Get There”

In a pivotal address to Parliament, President Maia Sandu called for unity, determination, and accelerated action on Moldova’s path to European Union accession. Against the backdrop of global instability and regional threats, she emphasized that joining the EU is a strategic goal and a national necessity for ensuring peace, freedom, and prosperity.

“There is no doubt—we can ensure peace and freedom much more easily once we join the European Union,” the president said. “There we will be protected, like a large loving family. That’s why we must work day and night to join the EU as quickly as possible. Not in 10–20 years, but in the next four.”

The Stakes of a Changing World Order

Sandu’s speech painted a sobering picture of the current international climate. She noted that the world is undergoing a “profound transformation,” marked by growing military, diplomatic, and commercial conflicts. In this context, she argued, Moldova must find its place and secure its future.

“In our region, for three years, Russia has been waging an unfair and brutal war against Ukraine,” she said. “People are worried and expect answers. What future does Moldova have in this world? What can we do to protect our country and ensure our prosperity?”

She reiterated that the most significant duty of the state is to preserve peace and freedom, values that must remain at the core of all political and social efforts.

The EU Accession as a Path to Security and Stability

Sandu emphasized that the EU membership is the clearest path toward a stable and secure Moldova. She reminded lawmakers and citizens alike that this effort requires commitment, resilience, and cooperation across political and societal lines.

“This is our window of opportunity,” she said. “Until we join, we must safeguard our peace through external solidarity and internal unity.”

She reaffirmed Moldova’s alignment with democratic values and international law, highlighting the importance of strong ties with Romania, Ukraine, and other EU states. “Moldova is a small country with a foreign army on its territory,” she added, referencing the illegal stationing of Russian troops in the Transnistrian region. “This is a flagrant violation of our neutrality and a serious security risk.”

Fighting Destabilization and Corruption

The president warned that Moldova is the target of well-financed destabilization campaigns designed to sow division and unrest. She accused some actors, including members of Parliament, of being complicit in these efforts.

“There are people here ready to harm their relatives, neighbors, even their children,” she said, referencing those involved in schemes to undermine the state from within.

Sandu contrasted the current situation with the past, stating that Moldova has moved away from corruption, international isolation, and the looting of state resources. “Today, Moldova is no longer isolated. The government is not stealing the budget; it is strengthening it. We are engaged in a real and consistent fight against corruption,” she said.

She praised the emergence of a new generation of politicians untainted by the corrupt practices of the past—politicians who, in her words, “do not operate with tricks, bags of money, and lies.”

Overcoming Energy Blackmail and Supporting the Whole Country

Sandu also addressed the issue of energy security, noting that Moldova has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian energy and built its gas reserves. She highlighted the government’s efforts to help residents on both banks of the Dniester overcome the energy crisis triggered by external blackmail.

“When manipulation didn’t work on the right bank, the pressure shifted to the left bank. But their plan failed. We found solutions. We provided help. We overcame the crisis,” Maia Sandu said, underlining the importance of unity and resilience.

A Call for Responsibility and National Unity

President Sandu heartily appealed to all political forces to act responsibly, especially in the face of growing geopolitical tensions.

“The world has become more dangerous and unpredictable. But we have faced hardships before, and we succeeded. We must now maintain internal stability,” Sandu said. “Stop hate speech and divisive rhetoric. Nothing justifies destabilizing the country and putting the safety of our people at risk.”

She expressed confidence in Moldova’s progress and the people’s ability to overcome challenges through solidarity, wisdom, and hope.

A Message of Hope and Renewal

Sandu closed her speech with emotion, looking ahead to the upcoming Easter holidays and encouraging citizens to embrace peace, reconciliation, and compassion.

“We have peace. We have friends. We are on the path to the EU. Despite global turmoil, Moldova has two treasures: the unity of its people and the support of those who wish us well,” she said. “I believe in Moldova. I know we will achieve what we desire—a protected, prosperous, clean, and joyful country.”

Parliament responded to her remarks with applause, widely interpreting them as a rallying call for political mobilization and a reaffirmation of Moldova’s strategic priorities at a crucial moment in its history.
