President Maia Sandu condemned Russias launch of the Oreshnik ballistic missile against Ukraine, saying the attack aims to intimidate Ukraine and its partners.

Sandu said the missile strike hit energy infrastructure and civilian housing and described the action as an act of terror. She warned that the war is moving closer to Europe and threatens regional security, and she reaffirmed Moldovas solidarity with Ukraine.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu also issued a statement today strongly condemning Russias use of the Oreshnik missile.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces launched 36 missiles and 242 drones against Ukraine during the night of January 8 to 9. The attack included a hypersonic Oreshnik missile fired at the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, near the border with Poland. Russia has used this type of missile for the second time since the start of the war.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the attack near the border of the European Union and NATO represents a serious threat to European security and a test for the transatlantic community.

The overnight bombardments killed at least four people in Kyiv and injured dozens of others.

Russia first used the Oreshnik missile with a conventional payload in November 2024, when it struck the city of Dnipro in central eastern Ukraine.
