President Sandu: Moldova Seeks Closer Energy Cooperation with the U.S., Backs Kulminski as Ambassador

President Maia Sandu reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to strengthening ties with the United States and emphasized the country’s interest in continuing American-backed energy projects.

“This is an area of utmost interest to us — to deepen our relationship with the United States,” Sandu said in an interview with Cinema1. She noted that Moldova values U.S. support and hopes to build on the progress achieved through bilateral cooperation.

Sandu voiced support for Vladislav Kulminski as Moldova’s potential new ambassador to Washington, stating he would be a suitable candidate if formally proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The new ambassador will need to focus on strengthening this relationship,” she added, referencing the evolving priorities in Washington and the need for renewed dialogue.

“We’ve held constructive discussions with both Democrats and Republicans in Congress. There are new topics on the agenda that require fresh dialogue, and the ambassador will play a key role in advancing those conversations,” Sandu said.

“We’ve received support for repairing schools, kindergartens, roads, churches, and tourism development. We are grateful and hope to continue this cooperation,” the president stated.

If we can continue energy sector projects together, we’d be very pleased. If not, we’ll explore co-financing options with other partners, especially the European Union.”

On 30 May, the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration issued a positive advisory opinion on Kulminski’s candidacy for Ambassador to the United States.
