Prosecutors Seek 9-Year Sentence for Gutul over Alleged 42 Million Lei in Illegal Party Funding

Prosecutors are seeking a 9-year prison sentence for Evghenia Gutul and a 5-year sentence for Svetlana Popan, Ziarul de Garda reports. Authorities accuse both of financing political parties allegedly controlled behind the scenes by Ilan Shor.

According to the prosecutors, Gutul and Popan accepted funding worth approximately 42 million lei, the outlet notes. The prosecution is also requesting that the court ban both women from holding certain positions for five and eight years, respectively.

“The evidence proves their guilt. Prosecutors built the charges on materials gathered during the criminal investigation, and courtroom witnesses confirmed their case,” stated prosecutor Cristina Gladcov.

Authorities detained Gutul in March and placed her in pretrial custody. She also faces a separate case concerning irregularities in her campaign’s financial reporting. The Governor of Gagauzia pleads not guilty and claims that political motives drive the investigation.
