Recean on U.S. Funding for Energy Projects: ”We Will Continue Cooperation, But Adjustments Are Needed”

Prime Minister Dorin Recean assured that the strategic energy sector projects funded by the United States will continue, even if certain adjustments might be necessary following recent statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the use of foreign funds.

When asked whether there is a real risk of funding being halted and what solutions the government has in this context, Recean emphasized that Moldova is working closely with the U.S. and exploring alternatives to ensure the projects move forward.

“This is an extensive collaboration program with the United States, and we firmly believe it will continue. Of course, officials may implement certain adjustments. The government has already identified several opportunities to ensure that strategic energy projects, as well as initiatives in culture, media, the fight against disinformation, and other areas, can move forward,” the prime minister stated.

Recean noted that institutions responsible for foreign policy are actively working to ensure Moldova’s priorities are considered by the White House. He also emphasized that while the country must prepare for possible adjustments, Moldova will maintain a strong relationship with the U.S., and the government will continue its cooperation programs with American authorities.

These statements come as Donald Trump has, for the second time, suggested he may reconsider how the U.S. allocates funds to international partners, including Moldova.
The suspension of support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has affected four projects with a total value exceeding $200 million.
