Romania’s Border Police seized the Romanian identity cards of 870 Moldovan citizens with dual citizenship during inspections at border checkpoints. Authorities in the neighboring country stated that they confiscated the documents after discovering that their holders had declared fictitious residences in Romania, reports stiriiasi.ro.

Officials applied the measure under Emergency Ordinance No. 105 of 2001, which authorizes the suspension of travel when identity documents fail to meet legal requirements.

By losing these documents, the affected individuals can no longer travel freely within the European Union, limiting their access to employment and other opportunities in the Schengen Area.
