Romanian leaders sent congratulatory messages to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova following the presidential elections and referendum on October 20. President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, and Speaker Nicolae Ciuca reiterated the importance of our European path.
Romanian officials highlighted the need to support Maia Sandu in the second round of the presidential elections. They believe Russia influences the region through propaganda, but citizens have shown strong European aspirations and visions.
“I commend the vote for European integration in the referendum in Moldova and the popular support expressed for President Maia Sandu and democratic values. The fate of Moldova must be decided only by its citizens,” stated President Iohannis.
Nicolae Ciuca characterized the narrow vote in the referendum as an important step for Moldova towards the EU. At the same time, he praised Maia Sandu’s performance in the first round of the presidential elections.
“The extremely close result of the referendum demonstrates the power of Russian propaganda manipulation. It is clear that Russia continues its hybrid aggression against Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe,” stated the President of the Romanian Senate.
The head of the Bucharest government believes that the leadership in Chisinau has faced Russian challenges effectively. According to him, even though it was “a tight situation,” the referendum proves that Moldova’s future lies within the European Union.

“Congratulations to all Moldovan citizens who resisted the incredible pressures from Moscow and succeeded in steering their country towards the right side of history. The razor-thin result of the referendum for integration into the European Union is evidence that we must intensify our efforts to convince citizens in the provinces and rural areas, where Russia’s propaganda is more effective, that Moldova’s future lies solely to the West,” stated Prime Minister Ciolacu.
Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan stated that the outcome of the referendum in Moldova “represents a clear victory for its citizens and for the country’s European future, despite Russia’s attempts to destabilize the democratic process.”
