President Maia Sandu delivered a speech at the High-Level Conference on Social Rights – the European Social Charter, held at the Palace of the Republic on Thursday, March 19.
In her speech, the head of state emphasized that social rights are a fundamental pillar of democracy—a lesson Moldova has learned from its own experience.
“In recent years, we have seen how fragile our institutions can be when social vulnerabilities are exploited. Our adversaries deliberately use poverty and frustration to undermine public trust,” Maia Sandu said.
Minister of Labour and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru also attended the event.
“For us as a country, it is an honor to host this conference during our Presidency of the Council of Europe. These days, we are discussing social rights—the right to work, to decent work, decent wages, workplace protection, and more,” the minister said.
Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset, who is attending the high-level conference on social rights, expressed satisfaction that the event is taking place in Chisinau:
“We are very pleased to hold this important meeting in Chisinau, especially at a time when we see how important it is to invest more, work more, and continue our efforts for social rights. Inclusive societies are not only about infrastructure or strong protection and defense systems, even though we are facing a difficult situation with the many crises in the world,” Berset said.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, in partnership with the Council of Europe, is organizing the High-Level Conference on Social Rights – the European Social Charter on March 18–19 in Chisinau. The event brings together approximately 50 delegations from Council of Europe member states, European institutions, and international organizations.
