Scandinavian Countries Contribute to Moldova’s Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund

Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are contributing to the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund (EVRF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support Moldova’s energy-vulnerable households during the winter season.

Denmark provides $5.59 million, Norway $8.86 million, and Sweden $9.9 million. These funds will help Moldova’s government ensure energy compensation for those in need.

Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu expressed deep gratitude for the assistance.

“I want to thank the governments of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden for their generosity and friendship during these difficult times. This donation will help the most vulnerable people stay warm and safe. We are honored to have you as reliable partners in social protection,” he said.

UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Daniela Gasparikova also praised the Scandinavian countries for their solidarity with Moldovan citizens facing rising energy costs.

“Our work goes beyond short-term relief. Together with our partners, we are committed to strengthening Moldova’s energy system to ensure people have access to sustainable and affordable energy in the long term,” she emphasized.

The EVRF’s Impact and Ongoing Support

Moldova established the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund in 2022 with support from the European Union, Slovakia, and UNDP. Since its launch, the fund has helped over 895,000 households by providing energy compensation.

UNDP has played a key role in mobilizing resources for the fund. In the 2022-2023 season, UNDP facilitated $10 million from Sweden and $6.67 million from Switzerland. 2023-2024, Sweden contributed $9.63 million, while Italy added €5 million.

For the 2024-2025 cold season, UNDP, Italy, and other development partners continue to support the EVRF, ensuring its operations, modernizing IT systems, and maintaining a dedicated call center.

This ongoing international support strengthens Moldova’s energy security and provides relief to thousands of vulnerable families.
