Siegfried Muresan, Member of the European Parliament, emphasized that the Republic of Moldova urgently needs strong support from Romania and the European Union to counter any interference in the upcoming autumn elections and to ensure the vote remains free and fair. He considers the September 28 parliamentary elections crucial for preserving Moldova’s European path, according to IPN.
In a Facebook post, Muresan warned: “Any Romanian politician who calls for reducing support to Moldova merely plays into Russia’s hands and adopts an overtly anti-European and pro-Russian stance.”
He argued that the elections impact not only Moldova’s European future but also Romania and the EU, since the security of EU borders depends on Moldova’s stability and commitment to its European trajectory.

The official added that Russia and pro-Russian actors in Chisinau are preparing new hybrid actions aimed at influencing the electoral process, including bribery estimated at over €100 million, disinformation campaigns, and cyberattacks targeting state institutions.
“Citizens of the Republic of Moldova—not the Russian Federation—must decide their country’s future,” Muresan concluded.
At the end of July, Romanian President Nicusor Dan pledged to help Moldova strengthen its cybersecurity, provided the authorities in Chisinau request assistance. He emphasized that Romania will offer support without interfering in the electoral process.
