Taormina Conference Reaffirms EU Support for Moldova’s Integration Path

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popsoi, participated on June 19 in the conference marking the 70th anniversary of the historic Messina Conference.

During his speech, Minister Popsoi reaffirmed Moldova’s strong commitment to European values and highlighted the government’s determination to advance on the path of EU integration: “The Republic of Moldova is ready to take this step. We have the political will, the citizens’ support, and a firm commitment to deliver results.”

Popsoi emphasized that the spirit of Messina’s vision remains relevant: “Messina 1955 was a starting point for European construction. Looking back, we better understand how important it is to carry this project forward with determination and vision.”

European leaders and top officials at the Taormina conference reaffirmed their support for Moldova’s EU integration. European Commissioner Marta Koss, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, and France’s Minister Delegate for European Affairs, Benjamin Haddad, all advocated for accelerating Moldova’s EU accession.

They stressed that integrating Moldova into the EU is a security imperative and a key step in the reunification of the European continent, affirming that Moldova deserves a place in the European family.

The conference concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration by EU member states, reaffirming their strong commitment to European integration and continental unity.

On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Popsoi met with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to discuss bilateral cooperation and Italy’s support for Moldova’s EU bid. They highlighted the positive effects of the new social security deal for Moldovans in Italy.
