Since October 2021, the Republic of Moldova has received support for 1.2 billion euros from the European Union, the European Investment Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
“The EU continues to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders and is determined to continue to strengthen the country’s resilience, including on the issue of energy security, enhanced security and defense cooperation and support for reforms,” the statement says EU’s Delegation in Chisinau.
Of the total support amounting to 1.2 billion euros, 404.5 million were investments in the Economic and Investment Plan. 295 million euros were provided in the form of macro-financial assistance, and 240 million – budgetary support for the energy sector, including energy efficiency. €114 million was bilateral assistance to stimulate the economy of the energy sector, combat disinformation, and reform justice. Other resources were allocated to humanitarian aid, border management assistance, support for independent local media, the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova, and the European Peace Foundation. Support was also provided in the cyber security and the refugee crisis.
The EU is currently offering macro-financial assistance totaling 295 million euros. This includes a package of 150 million euros, recently expanded to 145 million euros. So far, 100 million euros have been allocated.
“This is an important support from the EU for one of the countries most affected by Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.”
The financial package announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on November 10, 2022, in addition to an increase in macro-financial assistance, provides for budget support of 105 million euros for 2023.
