The organization of elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, scheduled for March 22, does not fall under the direct authority of the Central Electoral Commission. The CEC Vice President Pavel Postica made this clarification to IPN after the electoral authority in Comrat announced that it cannot hold the vote.

Pavel Postica said that the electoral body in Gagauzia is responsible for organizing regional elections. He explained that a regional electoral code regulates the vote and that this code contains several provisions that contradict national electoral legislation, including rules related to the name and status of the electoral authority.

The electoral commission in Comrat stated that it cannot organize the elections following a decision of the Supreme Court of Justice. The court upheld an appeal filed by the Comrat Territorial Office of the State Chancellery and suspended the enforcement of the decisions adopted on December 16, 2025, by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia on the establishment of the regional electoral body.

The suspension remains in force until the court examines the case on its merits. In the absence of a functional electoral body, the authorities cannot hold the elections. Representatives of the Comrat Electoral Commission said they will later inform candidates and the public about the next steps after the court issues a final decision.
