Victor Negrescu, Vice President of the European Parliament, stated that Moldova’s decoupling from Ukraine in the EU accession process is not desirable, even in Chisinau. In an interview with ziua.md, he noted that such a move could complicate the official start of accession negotiations.

Negrescu explained that tensions have also risen due to the strained relations between Kyiv and Budapest. At the same time, he believes that any potential decoupling would be poorly understood by Ukrainians.

“I believe that separating Moldova from Ukraine is not desired, not even here in Chisinau. It would be difficult because it would send a message that would be hard to understand for the citizens of Ukraine, who are fighting for their independence and their European path. We do not want to send this kind of signal today, and as I mentioned, Chisinau does not wish to send such a message either,” stated the Brussels official.

Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia submitted their EU membership applications after the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
