The EU will invest €32 million to repair the North-South railroad corridor in Moldova

The European Union will invest €32 million in grants to rehabilitate Moldova’s North-South railway corridor, a critical project to enhance the country’s connectivity with international transport networks. These funds will modernize railway infrastructure, with Obermeyer Hellas (Greece) and DB Engineering & Consulting (Germany) providing oversight services to support the rehabilitation efforts and facilitate Moldova’s integration into European transport systems.

At a ceremony today at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR), State Secretary for Transport Mircea Pascaluta attended the signing of a consultancy contract between Moldova’s Railway (CFM) and representatives from Obermeyer Hellas and DB Engineering & Consulting. These companies won the tender to provide implementation and supervision support for the rehabilitation of the Valcinet-Ocnita-Balti-Ungheni-Chisinau-Cainari railway corridor.

The project is part of the EU’s Solidarity Corridors initiative, which allocates up to €32 million for revitalizing Moldova’s North-South segment. This funding will improve a vital rail link that connects Moldova’s northern and central regions with international networks.

“This project is vital to Moldova’s railway infrastructure development. The EU’s financial support is a significant step toward integrating Moldova into European transport networks. Cooperation with renowned European partners will modernize our infrastructure and foster essential economic ties for our future,” stated Mircea Pascaluta at the ceremony.

The EU will support the rehabilitation of the North-South railway corridor across 375 km, including repairs to 128 km in poor condition. This upgraded segment will improve connections with Moldova’s industrial hubs in the north and center and free economic zones in Marculesti, Balti, Ungheni, and Chisinau.

The corridor also supports exports, imports, and transit goods from Romania and Ukraine and links with the Cainari-Cimislia-Basarabeasca-Giurgiulesti railway, facilitating logistics for goods transshipped through Danube ports and the Black Sea.

This essential project will enhance Moldova’s trade connectivity with Romania and Ukraine. To support its implementation, Moldova’s parliament ratified agreements with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for a €23 million loan, with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for €41.205 million, and an amendment for an additional €18.205 million from the EBRD.
