The EU will Launch New Border Control System on October 12, Eliminating Passport Stamps

The European Union will introduce a new border control system for non-EU citizens starting October 12, according to IPN. The Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace traditional passport stamping by electronically recording travelers’ entry and exit dates, overstays, and denied entries.

As part of the new procedure, biometric data—including facial images and digital fingerprints—will be collected from visitors.

European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that the system aims to enhance security across the Schengen area. All EU member states, except Ireland and Cyprus, will implement the EES. Schengen-associated countries—Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein—will also adopt the system.

The timeline for implementing the system at the Moldova–Romania border remains unclear.

Following the rollout of the EES, the EU will also introduce the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for citizens from visa-exempt countries, including Moldova. The ETIAS authorization will cost €7, remain valid for up to three years, or until the traveler’s passport expires. You can obtain it online.
