The soldiers of the first National Army contingent deployed to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission have returned home.

On this occasion, Defence Minister Anatoly Nosatyi congratulated the 32 peacekeepers and thanked them for their professionalism during the UN mission in Lebanon.

“Each of the 32 peacekeepers have been good ambassadors of our country abroad and have sent the message that the National Army is well prepared and interoperable with the armies participating in UN missions”.

At the same time, the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Chisinau, H.E. Lorenzo Tomassoni, and the UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Moldova, Simon Springett, praised the performance of the first contingent of the National Army in the UNIFIL mission and declared that the Republic of Moldova is strengthening its position as a contributor to international peace and security.

During their six-month mandate, the National Army peacekeepers in UNIFIL carried out security and guard missions of military objectives and patrolling the area of responsibility, working under the command of the Italian forces.

It should be noted that UNIFIL is the first peacekeeping operation under UN auspices to which the Republic of Moldova has deployed a military contingent. Previously, the National Army participated in UN missions only with military observers and staff officers.
