The Government Reaffirms Support for Agriculture, Calls on Farmers for Constructive Proposals

The Government of the Republic of Moldova has reiterated its commitment to supporting agriculture and local farmers through investments, subsidies, and grants, with the aim of boosting the sector’s competitiveness on international markets.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized that the cabinet’s objective is for Moldovan farmers “to be wealthy, run successful businesses, and produce competitive goods sought after worldwide.”

Government spokesperson Daniel Voda underlined that concrete steps are already being taken:

“The Prime Minister has always said that he wants Moldovan farmers to be wealthy, to have competitive products sought after globally, and to run successful businesses. The government is acting in this direction through subsidies, grants, and support for modernization. We also regularly fund many successful micro-, small-, and medium-sized agricultural enterprises.”

Authorities urged agricultural representatives to present constructive proposals within the Economic Council platform, where the Farmers’ Force Association is represented.

“Those who claim to know everything, but have refused to do anything concrete for farmers from a public position, have a completely different agenda than the declared one. We expect concrete proposals on behalf of the Association,” the government’s representative added.

According to the cabinet, modernization and continued support for farmers will remain a priority. So that Moldova’s agricultural producers can withstand external competition and contribute to economic development.

Controversy Over Recean’s Remarks

The reaffirmed commitments come after a dispute triggered during the August 22 meeting of the Economic Council. At the event, Prime Minister Recean reportedly stated that it was irrelevant whether Moldova’s 1.7 million hectares of agricultural land were cultivated by “1,000 or 3,000 economic agents.”

The Farmers’ Force Association reacted sharply, calling the remarks “cynical and outrageous” and demanding that the Prime Minister either retract his statement or issue a public apology.

Turning to regional security, Macron strongly condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and rejected Kremlin propaganda:

“The European Union does not threaten anyone; it respects the sovereignty of states, and it is built on peace and prosperity. It is by no means the Soviet Union.”

Closing Message

Concluding his remarks, Macron reiterated France’s firm support for Moldova’s European aspirations:

“Our message is one of solidarity and confidence in our common future in Europe. Moldova has the courage and determination to choose its destiny, and we will stand by its side.”

The French leader thanked President Maia Sandu for the invitation and praised Moldovans for their resilience and vision of a European future.
