President Maia Sandu met today, March 20, with Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee and the highest-ranking military official of the NATO. The visit takes place in the context of more than 30 years of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and NATO, initiated through the country’s accession to the Partnership for Peace.

Maia Sandu stressed that in a regional and global context marked by uncertainty and evolving threats, strengthening defense capabilities and maintaining strong partnerships is a responsibility toward citizens. Particular attention was also given to threats in the cyber and information space.

The head of state expressed gratitude for NATO’s concrete support in cybersecurity and reaffirmed that “a Moldova capable of responding to these challenges is a Moldova that protects its citizens and contributes to the stability of the entire region.”

NATO officials also appreciated Moldova’s contribution to regional security, both through its role as a stable, democratic, and friendly neighbor to Ukraine and through the participation of Moldovan troops in international peacekeeping missions, such as the one in Kosovo.

The Republic of Moldova remains committed to deepening cooperation with NATO, while respecting its constitutional neutrality, for the direct benefit of its citizens and European security, Sandu added.

We also recall that the head of state met with UK Minister for Labour, Diana Johnson, who is visiting the Republic of Moldova on the occasion of the international conference on social rights.
