The Independent Journalism Center launches the 2025 Press Freedom Days

The Independent Journalism Center (IJC) is launching the 2025 Press Freedom Days, traditionally marked in May, to highlight the role and importance of free journalism. On May 3, several newsrooms across Moldova will publish a joint editorial posing a rhetorical question: What does a society without a free and independent press look like?

On May 5, IJC will release the Press Freedom Memorandum for May 3, 2024 – May 3, 2025. The document will outline setbacks and progress in Moldova’s media sector and provide an overview of the national press climate.

On May 6, IJC will stage a public action in front of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau under the message “We write on behalf of those who can’t anymore.” The event will show solidarity with journalists oppressed by the Kremlin and protest attacks on independent media. Participants will display written messages on a board in front of the Embassy in honor of journalists who have been silenced, imprisoned, or even killed. IJC calls on journalists, human rights activists, and civil society members to join and share how the war in Ukraine has affected freedom of speech and why defending a free press remains vital.

On May 13, IJC will announce the winners of the fifth edition of the Tulip Press Awards. Journalists submitted entries covering (non)compliance with human rights in Moldova, aiming to raise public awareness on these issues.
