The Italian Senate ratified the Social Security Agreement between Moldova and Italy

The Italian Senate ratified the Social Security Agreement between Moldova and Italy today, one month earlier than planned. After the Senate approves the document, the Chamber of Deputies will review it for final ratification under a fast-track procedure.

The agreement allows the accumulation of contribution periods from both countries, making it easier for Moldovan citizens to access pensions and other social benefits. It also eliminates the need to travel to Italy to submit pension applications and ensures pension payments are made directly in Moldova without additional costs.

“The vote in the Italian Senate brings us one step closer to enforcing the bilateral agreement on social security. It means concrete benefits and stronger social protection for Moldovan citizens. I thank our Italian friends for their solidarity and support,” said Labour and Social Protection Minister Alexei Buzu.

The agreement covers various social benefits, including old-age pensions, disability pensions resulting from illness or work-related accidents, and survivor pensions.

Moldova’s Parliament ratified the agreement on 28 November 2024, after officials signed it in Rome on 31 October 2024. Once Italy completes its procedures, the agreement will take effect, granting Moldovan citizens access to essential social insurance rights.
