Moldova’s Foreign Ministry has rejected accusations by the Russian Embassy that Moldovan authorities violated international law in connection with the inspection of Russian diplomatic couriers at Chisinau International Airport.

In an official statement, the ministry described Moscow’s allegations as false and said Moldovan authorities acted in full compliance with their international obligations.

“The claims that the authorities of the Republic of Moldova violated international law are false. The diplomatic bag was not opened, detained or subjected to any inspection that would contravene the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Likewise, the diplomatic couriers were not detained,” the ministry said.

The ministry added that all measures taken were fully consistent with both Moldovan legislation and the country’s international commitments.

“The authorities of the Republic of Moldova acted in full compliance with international obligations and national legislation,” it said.

The Foreign Ministry also criticized Russia’s position, accusing Moscow of selectively invoking principles of international law.

The statement came after the Russian Embassy in Chisinau claimed that two diplomatic couriers from Russia’s Foreign Ministry had been held for several hours at Chisinau International Airport and accused Moldovan authorities of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
