The National Library of the Republic of Moldova is proud to announce the forthcoming 7th edition of the National Reading Central Programme (PNLC), set to run from February to November. This year, the program will be themed around “Promoting European values through reading.”
Vera Osoianu, Deputy Director of the institution, shared insights into the extensive activities planned for 2024. The focus will be on providing methodological and practical support, as well as training to equip librarians with the necessary skills and competencies to actively contribute to achieving the specific objectives outlined for the 7th edition of the National ReadingCentral Programme.
Central to the program’s agenda are educational and cultural activities aimed at informing the community about European Union values and principles. Collaborations with specialists from various fields and the involvement of specialized staff from SNB libraries will ensure comprehensive engagement. Additionally, methodological conferences will be held across four regions of the Republic of Moldova, along with the development of a methodological publication tailored for the implementation of the 7th edition of the National ReadingCentral-2024 Program.

As the National Library Centre, in tandem with the National Library System, we will spearhead activities directly involving users. This includes promoting national literary heritage as an integral part of European heritage through initiatives like the “20 Writers and Researchers / 20 Meetings” campaign, organizing public lectures, and launching the “September – Not a Day Without Reading” campaign dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of European values through reading. Moreover, the 7th edition of PNLC-2024 will feature national competitions focusing on book promotion and reading in libraries with an emphasis on European values awareness.
In a bid to engage younger demographics, a mobile summer camp will be hosted, inviting active readers aged 16-18 to participate in voluntary activities aimed at promoting European values. Additionally, the 6th International Conference “Reading as a Basis for Culture, Knowledge, and Development” will convene various stakeholders including librarians, writers, publishers, and representatives from local and central public authorities.
The official launch of the National ReadingCentral 2024 Programme is scheduled for February 14, coinciding with the celebration of National Reading Day—an occasion endorsed by the Moldovan Parliament in 2022. The launch event will feature a conference led by Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Oleg Serebrian, titled “We Are What We Read”, underscoring the pivotal role of reading in individual and societal development.
The culmination of the program will be marked in November with a ceremony to review and reflect on the outcomes of the 7th edition of the National ReadingCentral Programme, 2024.
