The NBM Governor Anca Dragu Highlights Financial Stability, Innovation, and European Integration as Moldova’s Pillars for Development

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) Governor, Anca Dragu, delivered a powerful message about Moldova’s development strategy during the roundtable titled Risks, Opportunities, and Anchors for Development of the Financial and Banking System in the New Global Context. The event was a part of the Bucharest Leaders’ Summit: The Path to 5.0. From Vision to Reality.

Anca Dragu emphasized that, amid global challenges, Moldova relies on three key pillars: financial stability, responsible innovation, and European integration. These pillars form the foundation of the National Bank’s vision for the country’s future.

“In this global context of transformation, the National Bank of Moldova serves as a pillar of stability, a driver of innovation, and a facilitator of our European path,” Dragu stated.

She highlighted that Moldova’s banking sector remains well-capitalized, resilient, and prepared to face potential external shocks. The country has made notable progress in modern banking services: over 600,000 people actively use the instant payment system MIA, processing more than one million transactions monthly, totaling over 4.8 billion Moldovan lei.

“For the first time, digital payments have surpassed cash withdrawals from ATMs—a clear sign of changing mindsets and economic modernization,” Dragu emphasized.

Additionally, Moldova recently joined the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), with seven of the country’s ten commercial banks accepted for technical interconnection with the European system.

During her speech, the governor underlined the National Bank’s key role in Moldova’s European Union accession process, leading negotiations on three critical chapters: Free Movement of Capital, Financial Services, and Economic and Monetary Policy.

“Moldova has all the attributes to become Europe’s wonder child—an ambitious country rapidly developing and seriously building a European central bank in thought, action, and vision,” Anca Dragu remarked.

The roundtable formed part of the national project Together We Protect Romania, now in its 29th edition, and held from May 21 to June 16, 2025. The event brought together over 400 leaders, experts, and officials to discuss sustainable economic futures.
