The Prime Minister: “We can no longer, including today, take electricity from the Cuciurgan power plant”

Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced at the cabinet meeting that Moldova could no longer purchase electricity from the Cuciurgan power plant.

He urged the population to conserve electricity during peak hours, in the morning and evening. He emphasized that the situation remains manageable despite the possibility of isolated power outages.

“The situation is not simple, but the government has plans to prioritize natural gas supply to the right bank of the Dniester. We will manage these challenges. Although isolated power cuts may occur, the situation is manageable.

I urge everyone to mobilize, demonstrate solidarity, and save electricity, particularly during peak hours. Since we can not purchase electricity from the Cuciurgan power plant, including today, we must rely on the market, where costs are significantly higher. We must save electricity from 7:00 to 11:00 in the morning and from 18:00 to 23:00. I held a meeting, and all institutions will receive updated instructions to optimize energy savings. By doing so, we can reduce costs for everyone,” the Prime Minister stated.

Government spokesman Daniel Voda explained that Moldova could not secure enough electricity from Cuciurgan due to Russian bombardments in Ukraine. Russian attacks on Podolsk in Ukraine have disrupted the operation of the Cuciurgan power plant, reducing it to running on only two turbines.

The Energy Ministry has issued a circular urging central and local public authorities to implement concrete measures to improve energy efficiency in public institutions. This call follows Moldova’s declaration of a 60-day emergency due to the ongoing energy crisis.

The Ministry emphasized the urgent need to reduce peak-time energy expenses and mitigate risks caused by the crisis. The Ministry provided public authorities with a detailed list of organizational and technical measures that require minimal investment and must be implemented immediately without compromising citizen comfort.

To reduce electricity consumption, the proposed measures include:

  • Using natural light and limiting artificial lighting in line with labor regulations,
  • Replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs,
  • Installing motion sensors in high-traffic areas,
  • Unplugging chargers after devices are fully charged, and
  • Disconnecting unused electrical appliances to eliminate standby energy consumption.
