The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that a staff member of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Chisinau has been declared persona non grata in Moldova.
Earlier in the day, IPN sources reported the expulsion, but officials initially refrained from commenting. Several Telegram channels had also circulated the news before the Ministry issued confirmation.
The reasons behind the decision remain unclear. However, the development follows the recent detention in Romania of Alexandru Balan, former deputy head of Moldova’s Intelligence and Security Service (SIS).

Prosecutors accuse him of leaking classified state information related to Romania to Belarusian KGB officers. Romanian authorities say Balan allegedly met twice with Belarusian intelligence officers in Budapest in 2024 and 2025, providing secret information in exchange for money.
The government reacted through its spokesperson, Daniel Vodă, stating:
“The government’s message is clear: any act of treason and transmission of secrets must receive the proper legal qualification. We will continue efforts to identify those who sabotage and work in the interests of other states, not of the Republic of Moldova. This high-profile case is being closely monitored by the country’s leadership, including the prime minister. The authorities are working closely with the Romanian side to avoid undermining the investigation. International cooperation among specialized services is yielding results and shows the need to cleanse institutions of people who, unfortunately, have betrayed the interests of the Republic of Moldova.”
Internationally, tensions with Minsk have escalated as well. On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland had arrested a Belarusian spy and would expel a Belarusian diplomat accused of supporting “the aggressive action of the Belarusian state against Poland.”
