The Republic of Moldova Transfers Over 2,039 Pensions Abroad Each Month

More Moldovans who once worked at home and later abroad now receive social benefits, regardless of their domicile. By early April of this year, authorities granted 2,396 social benefits under Moldova’s bilateral international treaties. Of these, the National House of Social Insurance (NHSI) transfers 2,039 pensions monthly to Moldovans living in one of the 18 countries with which Chisinau has signed social security agreements, according to data shared by the NHSI with Teleradio-Moldova.

Most pension recipients live in Germany, where nearly 1,000 people receive their Moldovan pensions directly on their cards. Romania follows with over 500 beneficiaries, and Bulgaria with 131.

The NHSI also sends pensions to 120 former Moldovan contributors in Belarus and 97 in the Czech Republic. Other benefits reach Moldovans in Italy, Austria, Spain, Lithuania, Estonia, Belgium, Greece, Latvia, Portugal, Turkey, Hungary, and Poland.

Data from the NHSI also shows that 72 Moldovans who returned home now receive foreign pensions. Lithuania sends the most payments—32—followed by Estonia with 12, Belarus with 15, and Bulgaria with 13. These payments result from agreements allowing foreign pension funds to transfer amounts directly to the NHSI for beneficiaries residing in Moldova.

The NHSI added another 94 beneficiaries to the list during the first three months of 2025. In 2024, nearly 300 people started receiving pensions through international agreements.

Currently, Moldova is negotiating new social security treaties with Ukraine, Canada, Slovakia, France, Switzerland, Ireland, and Albania. The NHSI explains that these agreements will enable Moldovans who worked legally in those countries to receive pensions, whether they choose to stay abroad or return home.

Moldova has already signed international agreements based on the principle of proportionality with Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Austria, Estonia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Latvia.
