The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will help create an investment mechanism to connect the Moldovan diaspora in the United States with the business sector in the Republic of Moldova. Ester Ruiz de Azua, head of the IOM mission in Moldova, announced the initiative following discussions at the Moldovan-American Diaspora Business Forum, held in early May in Orlando, USA, according to IPN.
The event brought together active diaspora members, investors, entrepreneurs, opinion leaders, and officials from Chisinau. Participants focused their discussions on practical ways to grow cross-border trade, attract investments, and build partnerships that benefit both countries.
According to the IOM representative, the new project will engage the Government of Moldova, the private sector, local communities, and diaspora members to harness the human and financial resources of Moldovans living abroad. The organization will support the process with policies and services that make it easier for diaspora members to participate economically in their home country.
Among the current IOM-supported initiatives is the DAR 1+3 government program, which supports rural community development in Moldova through diaspora engagement. IOM will also develop a guide for Moldovan investors abroad, offering valuable information about business opportunities, success stories, and expert advice.
According to preliminary data from an IOM study, over 150,000 Moldovan citizens live in the United States. Many are already integrated into the American economy and run businesses, and their interest in contributing to Moldova’s development continues to grow.
Ester Ruiz de Azua reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to promoting sustainable partnerships and strengthening cooperation between public institutions, the private sector, and the diaspora.
