Three members of a Moldovan family were died and a seven-year-old girl was seriously injured in a fatal road accident in Greece’s Halkidiki region on Wednesday evening, according to Greek media outlets Naftemporiki and Newsit.

Greek authorities said the crash occurred at around 6:20 p.m. on the Nea Moudania–Sithonia provincial road near the village of Metamorfosi. For reasons that remain under investigation, a car registered in Moldova and driven by a 35-year-old man collided head-on with a tanker truck driven by a 44-year-old man.

The impact killed the 28-year-old mother and the couple’s six-month-old baby at the scene.

Firefighters rescued the 35-year-old father from the wreckage and transported him in critical condition to the General Hospital of Polygyros. He later died despite doctors’ efforts to save his life.

The family’s seven-year-old daughter was also taken to the same hospital with serious injuries, including head trauma, according to Greek media reports. The tanker truck driver was not injured.

Eight firefighters and three emergency vehicles responded to the scene, using specialized equipment to extract the victims from the vehicle.

Traffic police in Polygyros have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.
