The authorities in the Transnistrian region have extended the state of economic emergency, which has been in force since December 2024. However, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri said the decision serves mainly political and propaganda purposes.

Chiveri argued that the unrecognized authorities on the left bank of the Dniester use the measure to signal control over the economic situation and to project an image of protection for residents in the region.

“From a practical standpoint, we do not believe much will change. However, we can observe several important elements. One is political and related to public messaging. Through this decision, the structures in Tiraspol are trying to demonstrate that they are managing the economic situation and taking all necessary measures to protect citizens in the eastern districts,” he said.

He added that the decision also contains what he described as a propaganda component aimed at external audiences.

“We also see a propagandistic component directed primarily at external partners, intended to promote the narrative that the Republic of Moldova continues to economically blockade the region. This is completely false, and we reject it unequivocally,” he stated.

On June 17, the so-called Supreme Soviet in Tiraspol approved a decree issued by Vadim Krasnoselsky extending the economic emergency until July 17.
