The Cuciurgan power plant can technically resume electricity deliveries to the right bank of the Nistru, but Chisinau has not submitted any official proposals so far. The so-called foreign minister of Tiraspol, Vitalii Ignatiev, made these statements, as reported by BANI.MD.

He said that MGRES previously served as a major exporter of electricity, including to the right bank and external markets, and the plant’s capacity still allows deliveries to restart.

“The Cuciurgan power plant has significant potential and it would be rational to use it, but at this stage we have not seen any proposal from the Moldovan side,” Ignatiev stated during a TV program.

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu clarified earlier that the plant currently produces electricity only for the needs of the Transnistrian region. He explained that MGRES operates at minimum capacity—just enough for local consumption and to maintain grid stability.

“The Cuciurgan power plant produces electricity only for their needs. It consumes between 2 and 2.8 million cubic meters of gas and produces only the energy required for local consumption,” Junghietu said. He also stated that the authorities do not plan to resume electricity purchases from MGRES.
