The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed limiting the duration of stay for foreign students and journalists in the United States, as part of a broader plan to tighten legal immigration rules.
Under the proposal:
- Foreign students would be allowed to stay for a maximum of four years, even if their programs take longer. Currently, student visas cover the full duration of studies.
- Foreign journalists would be limited to a 240-day stay, with possible extensions. Chinese journalists would be allowed only 90 days, prompting criticism from Beijing, which called the proposal discriminatory.
