Two cases of West Nile virus infection were confirmed in Moldova on Tuesday, September 8, according to health authorities.
The first case was identified in a 65-year-old resident of Chisinau. The patient had not traveled to areas known to have West Nile virus circulation. Following an epidemiological investigation, the case was classified as locally acquired.
The patient is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.
The second case was confirmed in a 39-year-old woman from Tiraspol. According to available epidemiological information, she had recently returned from Germany. Following the investigation, the case was classified as travel-related.
Since the beginning of 2026, Moldova has confirmed two cases of West Nile virus infection.
The last cases reported in Moldova were recorded in 2024, when five infections were confirmed. All five were imported cases involving people who had traveled to areas where the virus was circulating, including Italy, Romania and South Asia.
According to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), 15 European countries have reported 1,086 locally acquired human cases of West Nile virus infection since the beginning of 2026.
Italy has reported the highest number of cases, with 516 infections.
