Ukraine celebrated Independence Day on 24 August, with solemn speeches and messages of support from both Kiev authorities and officials from the Republic of Moldova.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed citizens in the capital, emphasizing the ongoing fight for freedom and peace. “We want future generations to celebrate Independence Day in this square, under our flags, confident in the future and grateful to those who defended Ukraine in this war for independence,” Zelensky said. He praised the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians as a testament to the country’s unwavering collective will, adding, “Such a goal is worth living for. This is our mission. Happy Independence Day, great people of a great country! Glory to Ukraine!”
In Chisinau, Moldovan authorities expressed solidarity with Ukraine. President Maia Sandu highlighted the courage of the Ukrainian people and their role in preserving regional stability: “By facing barbaric aggression, Ukrainians defend not only their freedom, but also our sovereignty.”

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu affirmed confidence in Ukraine’s victory, posting a photo of the Moldovan Parliament illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. “We all want a free, independent, and peaceful Ukraine. I believe in the Ukrainian people,” he said.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean also lauded Ukraine’s fight for freedom: “Every day, Ukraine shows the world what devotion to the homeland means. We admire the courage and strength with which they defend their sovereignty and protect regional security.”
Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi delivered the most extensive message in Ukrainian, emphasizing Moldova’s friendship and solidarity. “Moldova has opened its arms to Ukrainian refugees. We see your pain, but also your strength and dignity. We are a family and share the same dream: a common European future based on freedom and justice,” he said.
