Ukraine will mark August 31 as the Day of the Romanian Language for the first time, the Ukrainian authorities announced during the visit of Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana-Silvia Toiu, to Kyiv, reports IPN.
“I have greeted the intention of the Ukrainian authorities to declare August 31 as the Day of the Romanian Language in Ukraine,” Minister Toiu wrote on her social media.
During her visit, Toiu met with Ruslan Stefanchuk, President of the Supreme Rada; Yulia Svyrydenko, Prime Minister; and Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
She met with Stefanchuk, stressed the need to address the concerns of Ukraine’s ethnic Romanian community, and proposed strengthening parliamentary dialogue between Romania and Ukraine, especially when drafting laws that affect these communities.

At her meeting with Prime Minister Svyrydenko, the two sides agreed to continue joint government sessions to resolve bilateral issues and advance cross-border infrastructure projects, which Toiu said would be crucial for Romanian companies seeking to take part in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
Discussions with Foreign Minister Sybiha focused on defense cooperation, support for Ukrainian exports and energy supply, and assistance to refugees.
“We do all these things not only because they are right and fair, but also because they are in Romania’s national interest: a revanchist Russia at Romania’s borders would be a huge danger to all Romanian citizens, whether they live in Romania, the Republic of Moldova, or Ukraine,” Toiu emphasized.
Today, the Romanian minister is in Chernivtsi for a trilateral meeting between Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine, as well as a meeting with members of the Romanian community.
It is the first bilateral visit of a Romanian foreign minister to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
