(VIDEO) Igor Dodon Announces Formation of Left-Wing Electoral Bloc for September Elections

Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), announced that left-wing parties will form a common electoral bloc for the early parliamentary elections scheduled for September. Dodon made the statement during an appearance on the Rezoomat show on RliveTV.

“It is vital for the left to consolidate,” Dodon emphasized, explaining that only a united front can prevent the fragmentation of left-wing votes. He pointed to last year’s presidential elections as a warning, noting the risks of running with separate candidates.

“The biggest mistake would be to repeat what happened in the presidential election,” Dodon said. “In the first round, our candidate from the Socialist Party received 25%, while other left-wing candidates collected about 15% combined. In parliamentary elections, where there’s only one round, if we run separately, the Socialists will enter Parliament, but other left-wing parties won’t—and their votes will be redistributed, largely benefiting PAS.”

Dodon also noted that recent changes to electoral legislation prohibit parties from running on another party’s list, a practice previously used as a “disguised bloc.” He warned that continuing this approach could lead to disqualification from the race.

“Therefore, the only viable path for the left is to form an official electoral bloc,” he asserted.

Dodon confirmed ongoing talks with the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova, the party led by Irina Vlah, as well as the party headed by Vasile Tarlev. The statutory bodies of the respective parties will make the final decisions regarding the creation of the bloc.
