(VIDEO) Is this a response to the Sovereignty March? From Russia, Dodon invites Moldovans to a rally in front of Parliament

While attending the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Igor Dodon invited Moldovans to join a rally on Monday in front of Parliament, which he claimed would be dedicated to Sovereignty Day. His call appears to counter the Sovereignty March organized by the government for the same day.

In a video posted on social media, the Socialist Party leader launched several accusations against Moldova’s leadership. Dodon claimed that “several thousand people” would gather to voice their concerns about Moldova’s current direction.

“We believe Moldova’s sovereignty is in danger. We believe Maia Sandu and PAS have surrendered sovereignty to external control. I invite you all to Parliament on Monday at 1:00 p.m. for a rally dedicated to sovereignty,” said Dodon from St. Petersburg.

Meanwhile, government officials have invited citizens to a Sovereignty March on Monday, June 23, at 7:00 p.m., starting at the monument to Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici on Alexei Mateevici Street in Chisinau. Participants will then march to the Presidency, where the Declaration of Sovereignty was adopted 35 years ago.

Following Dodon’s announcement, the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) responded sharply:

“We remind those who call for sovereignty from beneath the Kremlin’s windows that, 35 years ago, Moldova’s Parliament declared to the world that Moldovans no longer wanted their fate to be decided in Moscow. They rejected being part of a criminal empire. People choose to live in a free and sovereign state.”

The opposing events on Sovereignty Day underscore the deepening political divide in Moldova, as both sides seek to frame the meaning and legacy of the country’s 1990 declaration of sovereignty.
